Short answer? Mostly with strong Velcro tape. Sometimes with push pins. And on the right metal frame, with magnets sewn into the border.
Which one you use depends on what your window frame is made of. We get this question almost daily, usually from someone standing at their window with a tape measure, wondering if a magnetic window screen will even stay put. It will. You just need to match the method to the frame.
Which Attachment Method Works Best for Each Window Frame?
Here's the quick match-up we give our own customers.
| Frame Type | Best Method | Why |
| Vinyl | Velcro tape only | Smooth surface grips well. Nails can crack vinyl. |
| Painted wood | Velcro tape | Clean, flat paint holds adhesive nicely. |
| Bare or rough wood | Velcro tape plus push pins | Texture weakens glue, so pins add grip. |
| Aluminum | Velcro tape | Aluminum is not magnetic, so magnets won't hold. |
| Steel | Magnetic border, or Velcro | Magnets in the top and sides snap right on. |
How Do You Attach a Magnetic Screen to a Vinyl Window Frame?
Vinyl is the easy one. Most replacement windows in newer suburbs, think the subdivisions around Dallas or Columbus, are vinyl, and the surface is smooth and even.
- Wipe the frame with soap and water, then let it dry fully.
- Press the 2" Velcro strip along the top and the 1" strips down the sides.
- Skip the nails. Holes in vinyl can split the frame and may affect your window warranty.
That's it. No drill, no tools.
What's the Right Way to Install One on a Wood Frame?
Wood is a little fussier. In older homes, like the painted sash windows you see all over Savannah or Charleston, the paint can be flaky or the grain rough.
Is the Wood Painted and Smooth?
Then Velcro tape alone usually does the job. Clean off dust and loose paint first.
Is It Bare, Rough or Weathered?
Use the tape, then add the push pins we include. Space them along the top strip where the weight hangs. They leave tiny holes, so a dab of wood filler hides them later.
Can a Magnetic Screen Stick to an Aluminum Window Frame?
This one trips people up. Aluminum is metal, so it seems like magnets should cling to it. They don't. Aluminum isn't magnetic.
So, for the aluminum sliders common in older Florida condos or Phoenix ranch homes, we always recommend Velcro tape. It bonds well to clean aluminum. Just remove any oxidation (that chalky white film) with a mild cleaner before you stick anything down.
When Does a Magnetic Window Screen Frame Make Sense?
If your frame is steel, you can ask us to sew magnets into the top, the sides, or both. Customers asked for this, so we started offering it. Test first: if a fridge magnet sticks to your frame, you're good.
How Do Screen Magnets for Mesh Screens Actually Work?
The center seam holds a row of small magnets on each side. Walk through, and the two halves part. Step past, and they pull back together on their own. Hands-free.
The trick is a little slack. Hang the screen with a tiny bit of give, not stretched tight, so the magnets can find each other and close.
Is a Detachable Magnetic Window Screen Easy to Take Down?
It depends on how you mount it.
| Mount Method | How Easy to Remove | Trade-off |
| Velcro tape | Screen comes off, tape stays | Tape is hard to peel off the frame |
| Push pins | Very easy | Leaves small pin holes |
| Magnetic border | Lifts right off | Only works on steel frames |
Want to store your screen over winter? Velcro or push pins both work. Many folks up north leave the tape strips in place and just remove the mesh until spring.
Can You Get an Adjustable Magnetic Window Screen for Odd Sizes?
We don't sell stretchy one-size screens. Honestly, they sag. Instead, we build each screen to your exact size. You can even choose where the opening goes.
To measure:
-
Measure the window width (side to side) and length (top to bottom).
-
Add 2 inches to the length for the top tape.
-
Add 1 inch to each side of the width for sides tape.
| Window Opening | Size to Order |
| 30" wide x 48" long | 32" x 50" |
| 36" wide x 60" long | 38" x 62" |
We make it to the numbers you send. We don't add extra, so double-check them.
What Makes Magnetic Window Screen Installation Last Longer?
- Clean first. Dust and grease are the top reasons tape lets go.
- Pick a mild day. Adhesive bonds best when the frame is dry and not freezing.
- Press hard. Run your thumb along every strip for a few seconds.
- Add bottom weights if your window catches a strong breeze.
